In this experiment I will be showing you two methods on how to Making green fire with Borax.

The first method consists of mixing Borax with methanol 9 but this gaves a mixture of green and orange flame because of the sodium hydroxide .

The second method consist of mixing boric acid with methanol which gave a bright green falme .

• danger
• corrasive liquids
• wear protection equipment

If you like to avoid the dangers of making boric acid , it is some times sold as a roach-killing powder .
all experiments must be done outside or in a fume hood!

materials for Making green fire with Borax

for this experiment we will be needing

1. house hold hydrochloric acid ( muriatic acid )
2. borax ( used as laundry booster )
3. methanol ( used as charcoal lighter fluid )

First step for making green fire

pour as half a teaspoon of borax into a heat resisting beaker and then add 15 ml of household hydrochloric acid and heat the solution until it becomes clear

the reaction that is taking place is the following :

Na2B407 + 2HCI + 5H20 = 2NaCI + 4H3BO3

after heating

now let the solution cool down to room temperature when the beaker is at the room temperature , place it in an ice bath

boric acid is insoluble in cold water so it will precipitate

next step

Carefully decant the solution and let the beaker reach room temperature

for this step you can filter the solution and let the precipitate dry , or you can heat the solution to about 100 C to evaporate the water water and HCI that remain in the solution

stop heating when no more water evaporates

Pour some of the slush into another heat resistant beaker , add methanol untill it dissolves and use a long lighter to ignite the solution

and finally this is how you make grren fire

note that Boric acid does not actually burn in the flame .

Instead , the heat of combustion ioizes the salt , producing a characteristic green emission .

after all the methanol is consumed you will be left with crystals in the bottom of your beaker , you can scrape them and store them in a crystal bottle for future demonstrations
